Spring is blooming a vast array of dresses in shades of yellow, blue and green so why not surprise your man with something different this year?

This Spring, we see gorgeous frocks both in prints and solids. Fuss-free prints often stand out even on its own so you have to worry less about accessories. Solids, however, are fun and attention-grabbing, provided you choose colours that complement your skin.

PRINTS

(Top: Luella, Bottom: Elie Saab)

(Top: Donna Karan, Bottom: Bottega Veneta)

SOLIDS

(Top:Alessandro Dell'Acqua, Bottom: Kenneth Cole)
(Top: Donna Karan, Bottom:Bottega Veneta)

Photo credits:

www.style.com

www.vogue.co.uk

2006 Picks

The Spring 2006 Ready-to-Wear Collection showcase came and conquered, rushing fashion enthusiasts, designers, stylists, buyers and everyone who’s anyone in the fashion scene towards an exciting pilgrimage to Paris, New York and Milan. As most of us could only dream of being delivered an invite to one of the prestigious shows (and rub shoulders with Marc Jacobs), scouring through the detailed daily coverage and reports provided by websites such as Style, Vogue, JC Report is the next best thing to ooh-ing and aah-ing over the designs in actual place. It may not be front row seat it but hey, at least the runaway is brought closer.

Having religiously gone through the Pradas and the Versaces, here is the list of my favourite picks from the recent Spring 2006 Ready-to-Wear Collection.

The cropped jacket

Jackets are one of the best ways to dress up a simple outfit and on top of the list is the cropped jacket. It is meant to fall just around the waist, with the sleeves falling just below the elbow or shorter (which is great if you wish to make your arms look slimmer and longer). What makes the cropped jacket special, hence a must have, is that it goes with almost anything; dresses, skirts, jeans and even bermuda shorts. Let’s just hope Spring chill lingers a little longer.

The flirty frock

Thanks to Carrie Bradshaw and Charlotte York of Sex and the City, dresses and frocks are making a comeback. Reminscient of the 50s glam, these full dresses are flirty yet depict a demure image (most of the latest designs have hems just at the knee level or below). Take your pick from a selection of styles; boob tube, spagetthi strap or halter neck and pair it with great heels (of contrasting colour, of course) and you're set to make heads turn.

The stripes

Love them or hate them, stripes are classic. Horizontal and vertical lines of different shades have been making reappearances on the runaways again and again, that we are certain to have at least one or two stripy pieces hanging in our closet. Recent fashion shows were flooded with stripes again; stripy jackets, tops, dresses and many more. Stripes are great investments, its timeless look is almost guaranteed to never go out of style; provided you match them right. So remember, for your next shopping trip, be sure to get 'in line'.

The rich, dark hues

As cliché as it sounds, black is back; threading the runaways looking all glam and chic (e.g Balenciaga, Jean Paul Gaultier). From Victorian to Russian, black is all ‘in’ again, wrapped together with other rich, dark tones such as purple, midnight blue, teal, moss green and the likes. The idea here is to throw in just one or two dark pieces into your ensemble. Think dark colours too sombre for spring? Add embellishments such as glittering brooches or accessorize with bright necklaces to create a spring-y effect.

The belted waist

If Audrey Hepburn epitomises beauty and grace, then waistlines should be the epitome of femininity. Famous not only for her Oscar-winning roles but also for her tiny waistline, Audrey Hepburn did us all a favour by affirming the power of cinched waist. Waistlines are looking sexy again this coming season with fashion big names like Burberry choosing to adorn their creations with ribbons, sashes and belts of all colours and sizes. Party princesses, make a mark with rich fabric like satin and organza in colours like wine, deep cherry and gold.

The all-white ensemble

Chaste and pure. These are some of the descriptions that traditionally come along the colour white. In the present day however (what with Madonna’s Like a Virgin’s video), white has broken free (well, almost) from the purity it was born with. With plenty of sexy lace and corset tops, Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring/Summer 06 presentation of white for example, seems more sophisticatedly cheeky than virginal. The coming season shall see white blooming further, with designers bringing more white to their colour palettes.

Photo credits:
Style
Vogue

Time to Get Dressed!

While out shopping with a male friend recently, I was asked, “What is it with women and dresses? They seem to be falling in and out of love with each other so instantly.”

For a moment I was stumped, hit by a sudden pang of guilt seeing the two new dresses I have in my hands. As I walked to the changing room, the question rang louder. Really, what is it with women and dresses that we are willing to spend so much on those pretty pieces?

Classic, intricate, mutually dependent

The relationship between women and dresses is classic, intricate and mutually dependent. Classic because women have been dress worshippers since god-knows-when; from the elaborate afternoon dresses of the 1800s to the less complicated but equally romantic tea gowns of the early 20th century to Coco Chanel’s little black dress mantra, of which many women are still swearing by today. As of many other timeless fashion items, dresses have gone through countless periods of transformation, each one defining the needs, taste and personality of women in that era. All these while maintaining the femininity that remains a consistent trait of dresses. It is in fact difficult to dispute the fact that a certain amount of grace and elegance is added to a woman when she slips on a beautiful dress.

Does a woman make a dress or does a dress make a woman?

Just like the relationship between many couples, the relationship between a woman and dresses are mutually dependent. A woman makes a dress and vice versa. A beautiful dress lends its charms to a woman and a beautiful woman brings out the beauty of a dress. If a bride was to wear a white pant suit instead of a majestic wedding dress, the beauty that resides within her femininity may unlikely shine. Similarly, a grand Marc Jacobs silk dress would not come alive if it merely stands hanging on the wall. Therefore, a woman does make a dress, and especially so when the dress compliments her physical attributes. The birth of couture fashion was a signal to dressmakers’ understanding of the importance of creating dresses that flatter women’s different body structure. A dress, no matter how carefully cut, designed and adorned fails to make an impression if it does not suit the wearer.

Dressed to kill?

Needless to say, the power of a dress is one which ought not be underestimated. Dresses have served as a form of escapism, as testified by women who claim ‘I feel like a princess’ when putting on a beautiful evening dress. In the fashion industry, dresses are one of the benchmarks through which a designer’s talents, ability and certainly future, are evaluated. Have a celebrity parading one of your dresses and you are on your way up the A list. You can have your fabulous shirts and jackets but if your dresses fail to reach a similar level of fabulous-ness, your name drowns.

The recent Spring/Summer fashion show saw designers whispering the charms of the forties into their dresses. Full skirts and well defined waists were once again brought onto the runaway. The allure of dresses have become so inviting Style has reported that even behind the spotlights, high profile models are donning pretty frocks (see Model's Own)

What better reason to get that new dress?

Some of my recent purchases;

(Left-right, top-down)
White Audrey dress (maroon chiffon ribbon bought separately) from GothicGirl(NZ)
Batik-inspired wrap dress from Tightrope(AUS)
Brown babydoll dress with smock details (behind) from Phenomenal(MidValley)
Red summer dress from Sacha Drake(AUS)
Floral printed halter neck dress from Lolli(NZ)
Halter neck dress with black lace details and diamond brooch from SomersetBay (SOGO)

Photo credits:
Greg Kessler from Style

I'm back!

To those who missed reading my blog, I apologize for remaining "idle" for so long. Here are my long overdue entries, fresh from the oven ;)

First and foremost, long awaited pictures of my prom dress. Much sweat and tears went into that dress, thanks to a long list of complications which included problems finding the right material in the right color, getting SUFFICIENT material - upon failing which, we had to scrap the initial design and throw in a few modifications, and a very intense race against time (I had to juggle traveling to and from Bukit Bintang to meet the tailor with preparing for my finals within 1 week). However, all's well ends well. The end result was fantastic and I'm still in love with my dress till this day.

Front View

Back view

My tailor was such an angel to accomodate me into her busy schedule to hunt for materials and make time to alter my dress...and she did such a great job too! Too bad I couldn't afford to pay her more than the additional RM100 I gave her (original price was RM350). She definitely deserved more than that, and I definitely intend to go to her again.

Anyways, I ended up very happy indeed with the final result. Everyone complimented the dress, and I even got "jaw-drops". Haha every girl's dream come true - to make an impression at the prom. Oh, let's not forget that I had a drop-dead gorgeous date to boot, and he was sooo sweet, got me beautiful lilies that matched my french manicure! Sue me. Lol.

Ta-da!

Speaking of manicure, I got mine done at JJ nail salon in Midvalley megamall. They're really good, and the prices are reasonable. RM25 for a normal manicure and RM35 for a normal pedicure. Being the good girl that I was, I treated my mum to a manicure and a spa pedicure (RM50). I myself settled for a French manicure(RM35), as mentioned earlier, and a regular pedicure.

As for my prom accessories, I had a great time scouring the crevices of Jalan Masjid India with my mum. What I had in mind were Indian bangles, and Indian bangles were exactly what I got. Prices were really cheap too!

The sights at Jalan Masjid India

(L) Bangles galore, and (R) only RM9.90 per stack!!!

I also ended up getting a selendang (Malay headscarf) which I intend to use as a headband:

Shopping makes me hungry, so mum and I decided to head over to Coliseum Cafe at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman for lunch. It's so old, bordering on eerie, but charming in a way. Some of the waiters were so old; probably they've been working there since the colonial times, and the table cloth was kinda gross and stained (wonder if it was from the colonial times too), but the bar was pretty cool in a retro-ish kind of way. A baby cockroach scuttled across the table while we were waiting for our food...

Ancient menu...

...even more ancient tablecloth

Lunch crowd

Retro!

Prom day itself was a mad rush. At 12 I went to a nearby salon to touch up my nails cos I smudged my manicure on one finger. Then I went to my makeup artist's house to do my hair and nails and boy she did WONDERS! Too bad I can't show my face here. My hair and makeup was done around 4.30pm and I rushed back home to get dressed before my boyfriend came at 5 plus. We left the house at 6 and got stuck in a traffic jam till 7 plus. Phew.

Prom night itself was pretty boring, but the whole point of spending that much money was to be seen and ogled at (shallow as it seems, but true if you come to think of it), and that's precisely what we got, making every effort and dollar spent worth its value.

Making Room For Changes!

It is the Friday night that you have been waiting for. Your girlfriends have made plans for a wicked night in town and everyone was looking forward to catch up with one another. You come home early from work to give yourself ample time to prep up; the last time you met your girlfriends everyone looked a million bucks. You certainly need to look equally, if not more, fabulous this time around.

But you peel your wardrobe door open and a sudden panic rush attacks. Hung carelessly on the wooden hangers are dresses from last decade, off-season tops you grabbed at a warehouse clearance,skirts and jeans which have gone past their expiry date and ridiculously dangerous pieces like leather minis and skin tight pants which may actually look good if you were thirty pounds lighter. Stacked on the top shelf are boxes of even more ridiculously dangerous heels and boots, each having seen daylight on an average of twice. By the time you finish assessing your accessories and handbags, you have speed-dialled your best girlfriend, screaming "Help!I've got absolutely nothing to wear!"

This is a classic, all-too familiar scenario for many women. We may have hundreds of dresses taking up too much space in our already bulging wardrobe, yet putting together an outfit is often an agonizing experience. The problem stems not from lack of choice, but rather, from a mismatched collection of bad choices. What we need then, is not an emergency shopping trip but rather, a weekend of a major wardrobe overhaul.

The secret to a successful wardrobe makeover lies in knowing what to horde and what to part with. Have you already got too many white shirts? Have you got twenty three pieces of similarly-designed logo tees? When was the last time you wore that pink dress with the plunging neckline? (In the first place, have you actually worn it?)
Sort the items into two sections; those which you are willing to part with and those which you would rather tear your hair off than to give away. The rule is simple; anything that you have not worn in the last twelve months (okay, maybe six, if you have THAT many clothes) should go into the "Give Away" bin. Same goes for items which, how should I put it, have "miraculously shrunk", (therefore seem a little tight around the waist and a little small around the bottom). Remember, even if you lose those inces in the future, you are more likely to buy new clothes than to go back to that old Levi's you bought when you were eighteen.

Sienna Miller may have elevated the status of vintage dressing, but we all know that very few of us can pull off the vintage queen look without being mistaken for a fashion victim lost in time. Think that floral dress would be a sought-after vintage piece in another twenty years? Think again. Most vintage-inspired pieces have a modern twist to it, designers do not merely recreate trends of yesteryears but combine them with the trends of the present day.

Designer goods, however, are worth keeping. A Chanel suit bought in the early 80s hold as much value, if not more, as a Chanel suit bought last winter. Unlike average labels, the value of authentic designer creations tend to increase with time, especially when you have people like Ms Miller donning vintage oversized sunnies and carrying vintage LV purses. In the trend-conscious and trend-competitive world of Hollywood where everyone HAS to get that Birkin bag by hook or by crook, many are more than willing to pay big money for a vintage designer item that has been certified as a 'must have' by Vogue. It is important however, to have a proper storage plan for these items. Unless you want to risk smelling of mothballs, keep your designer dresses in individual bags and send them for dry cleaning at least once in a year. Needless to say, collecting designer goods is not exactly the hobby for those who cannot even bring themselves to doing their laundry on a weekly basis.

Having cleared your wardrobe clean of past retail mistakes and wrong impulse purchases, you are now ready to move on to the next step; the more fun and more challenging side of wardrobe makeover: shopping. But bear in mind that a fabulous wardrobe (think Carrie Bradshaw and her sorority sisters) is seldom created overnight. Slowly and carefully sift through magazines to find the style that you would want to create. Try to stay away from impulse purchases. Invest instead in pieces that would go well with what you already have in your wardrobe. The average minimum wage is per hour is RM4.50-RM5.00 an hour, but the internationally renowned (and FILTHY RICH) Golden Arches and fellow competitors only offer a measly RM3.50 an hour. You might as well call that exploitation of human labor. Come ON, Australia offers AUD15 an hour for the exact same position. Shame on you, Arches!

That said, what can you buy with RM100 nowadays? You could go to a fine dining restaurant like Chinoz on the Park and order one main course and a drink, or you could go to TGIF and order an appetizer, one main course, dessert, and a drink, or you could opt for approximately 30 meals at your friendly neighbourhood mamak stall. A movie ticket at GSC costs RM12 for twin seats regardless of movies, RM9-RM10 for new movies, and RM7 for students and on Wednesdays. As for clothing, average minimum price for a top is around RM30-RM40, jeans would start from RM60, shoes and bags around RM40. (As I mentioned, these figured are just estimates) Or someone could sponsor my prom tickets, which cost RM80.

Back to the question of "What can you buy with RM100?" Most people would answer, "Not much." So I decided to put RM100 to the test. Instead of heading straight to Midvalley Megamall or KLCC or 1Utama, I decided to go to the place where the financially restricted fashionistas shop - Sungai Wang Plaza. It is also heaven for those inspired by Japanese/Korean/Taiwanese/Hongkie street fashion. They go there to see and be seen. Oh, and some of the best hair salons around town are there too.

Shopping in Sungai Wang always gives me a headache. Why? First of all there's just TOO MUCH variety (alot of which is trash in my opinion), and sifting through the abundance of options is no mean feat, especially when one is on the lookout for the best price available, and almost all the shops sell similar items (some even the same). Secondly, it's the music. One shop is playing Usher Raymond, the other Jay Chou, and then there's Utada Hikaru and suddenly and *gasp* suddenly tacky "feng-tau" techno starts assaulting my poor eardrums. These are the two main reasons I seldom visit that place, apart from laziness to take public transport, and the horrendous crowds on weekends.

However, this day was different as I was on a mission. I wanted to buy accessories to spice up my blah-looking wardrobe, at a cheap price. Christmas is just around the corner and so is prom, both of which are going to burn major holes into my already half empty Louis Vuitton. I went mentally prepared, and armed with nothing but RM100.

The secret weapons to a bountiful harvest in Sungai Wang are a notepad and a pen/pencil (or a very good memory), a whole day ahead of you, and a good pair of walking shoes. The place isn't that big, but its like a maze of shops that all look the same on every floor. So you start from the highest (or lowest) floor and start browsing around for whatever catches your fancy. It's better to have prepared a shopping list beforehand otherwise you'll end up not knowing what to buy. Write down the item, the price, and the shop name and location before moving on, gradually covering the whole of Sungai Wang. After that revise the list that you've made and if you have enough cash, get all of it. If not, cancel off those that are of lower priority. This is also very convenient for the purpose of price comparison.

Right, so now that the cat is out of the bag, let me present to you my bounty for the day:

Black & White pearl necklace - RM12.90 each

Stone bracelet - RM9.90

Wooden bangles - around RM16 each, Vincci

Pink lacey polka-dot babydoll top - RM19.90

Pink peep-toe heels - RM29.90

Hairbands - RM2.90 each, Chameleon

As you can see, I managed to get quite alot of accessories, as I had intended to. Same applies for me. I'd be able to find, and probably buy something of my fancy even if you drove (read: dragged) me to a wet market where the smell of fish and chicken poo permeates the air. I'd be able to spot the one stall - an oasis in a desert, selling hair accessories/accessories/cheap pasar clothes from miles away despite my apparent astigmatism and long-sightedness that convinced my mum to part with RM400 for a pair of Sisley glasses.

Back to the topic of being stranded. After about a week of 'dai chao' (ordering food at chinese coffee shops), me and my brother were so sick of it that we insisted that we wanted something good (also read: more expensive) for dinner. And so the whole family happily dropped by the new Hartamas Shopping Center for dinner at Sure Pizza Italian restaurant. I must say the food is absolutely yummy! And the prices are quite reasonable too. I highly recommend the calzone (RM24.90), a wrapped pizza shaped like a giant currypuff stuffed with pepperoni, mushrooms, turkey ham and CHEESE! Oooooh soooo good. And if you're up for dessert, do try their home-made ice-cream (RM7.90 for 2 scoops) which comes in a variety of flavors such as berries, chocolate marshmallow, hazelnut (I had this one and it was deeelicious), the classic vanilla, and a few others I can't quite recall. Their tiramisu is good too. Darn I'm getting hungry already....

After a hearty meal, its time to burn off the calories, and what better way than to shop it off? I read somewhere that you can burn up to 450 calories an hour shopping, but that includes browsing in the shops and trying on about a dozen outfits in each boutique. We didn't do anything as drastic as that because my dad and brother were there, and you know how guys usually are when it comes to shopping. There you are happily walking into this shop chock-full of yummy stuff and they would just walk out of the shop and wait for you outside. Kill-joys. Hmph.

However, it was a happy day for me because it was one of the rare occassions that daddy dearest paid for my purchases. Maybe I should conveniently "forget" to bring my wallet more often...Usually I have to pay out of my own allowance, which explains why I'm such a scrooge when it comes to going out with my friends. I'm the kind that would starve myself just so I can buy more. I know its unhealthy, but who says that eating King's almond raisin twist would do you any harm? Especially when it costs RM1.40 only.

In the 1 and a 1/2 hours that we spent there, I managed to get two items, which I think were VERY cheap.

Striped top - i.d.d. They did have this top in black and white but it didn't look that nice and I don't know why.

Turquoise with orange/gold beaded mules - XES Appeal (RM19.95)

Lovely shoes at an even lovelier price. By the way, read the spelling for XES appeal backward. ;)

I went home feeling very happy indeed. Like I said, "Shopping makes me happy, especially when its not my own money". Heh. I have done everything possible to kill time; cleaning the fridge, dusting my window blinds, writing postcards to myself. Yet, I still feel like another eight hours have been added to the usual twenty-four. In the event of such boredom, I do what every fashion lover on tight budget does best; I window shop. I would visit my favourite stores, checking out what is latest, staring longingly at the mannequins on display. I could spend hours scrutinizing the different materials, the different cuts and the ways different pieces are put together to create a brilliant ensemble. It is through such experience that I slowly build my fashion resources.

But the frustration of window shopping could sometimes be overwhelming. How many times have we found that perfect dress, in that perfect shade and that even more perfect size (an added bonus would be when it fits snuggly around the bust and seems to accentuate our assets) only to flick on the price tag and boo hoo hoo, the triple digit tag simply screams 'not affordable, unless you are willing to starve for two weeks'.

For someone who wishes to have a decent university life (read: clean accomodation, 'real' regular meals), I know that even the paypackets from my two part-time jobs are only thick enough to allow for the occasional rich indulgences. I do allow myself small purchases but with the dream of touring the Europe keep on looming above my head even as I roll the kebabs and do the take-away orders, designer and branded items have to be reserved as semesterly treats.

(Picture: Much desired Ralph Lauren peep toe heels)

Unlike the Hilton, Olsen and other sisters with similarly ever-expanding income, the majority of us could barely invest in a Louis Vuitton without having to save up six months in prior (or for the bolder chicks, skimp six months after). And unlike Them The Privileged Ones too, the majority of us have rent and bills inconveniently standing in between us and the seen-it-on-SATC-Manolo Blahniks. The temptation to fish out the Mastercard and make one happy swipe is difficult to resist but the thought of my father even more happily snipping the plastic into two is often enough to bring me to my senses.

So with such traumatizing pain, why still window shop? I know of a handful of people who find window shopping completely time-wasting. It is the middle of the month and your purse is drier than the damns in Kuala Selangor during the draught season. Why further torment yourself with more retail cravings? While people like me make enough visits to the mall to know which floor has the best washroom, there are those whose number of shopping trip in a year could be counted by the fingers. "I dont shop often, but when I do, I just grab whatever I like, regardless of the price," confessed one non-believer of window shopping.

As thrilling as it may sound (imagine, walking into AX and not having to put your inner-shopaholic self in restraining order), somehow the idea of squeezing my weekly store visits into a seasonal event does not seem so appealing. Yes, it is difficult having to walk out of my favourite store sans a purchase but at least the frequent trips help to inform me of what is in, what is current, what looks good and what looks trash. It helps to ensure that I do not blow a week's pay on a supposedly-very-Sienna ensemble only to go home and realize that the boho maiden look is not exactly me. Regular window-shopping sessions also mean that I have the most current and updated information on fashion bargains at my fingertip. Believe me, when you have swiped on a pair of very sexy, very expensive heels, you would not want to walk into the store next door to see a very similar pair priced at very much less.

With the growing number of shopping malls in the relatively small city of Kuala Lumpur, one seldom has to wonder how much us KL-ites love window shopping. It has become almost a culture; to head down to giga-sized shopping malls on the weekends and to hold our breath as we stop in front of Tiffany & Co, joyous that the quest for the perfect wedding ring is over (so now we just have to search for the perfect groom).

And as for me, I am convinced that window-shopping shall continue to help fill the daily extra eight hours that I have until summer vacation is over. The need for retail indulgences is strong yet there is a strict budget I have disciplined myself to live on, so what better way to feed the retail hunger without placing a hazard on my financial situation?

Free ride to the mall? Anytime babes.

Two more items added to my "can't live without it" list...

Contrary to popular belief, I don't hate the sun, I'm just obsessed with maintaining my uber-pale, porcelain-like albeit occasionally flawed complexion. And for those looking to become fair like me, I highly recommend bundling up and spending a month in Norway in December freezing your ass off :) Your only requirement is a pre-programmed set of "fairness" genes.

I have never used sunblock in my entire life (except when swimming), the reason being that I hate that heavy, sticky feeling it leaves on my face. I can imagine the thick goo seeping into my pores and clogging them up, and one day I'll wake up with a major breakout. Eek! Nightmare of all nightmares, woe of all woes! As a result, all these years of exposure to sun has caused the area around my cheeks to become thinner and highly sensitive. My beautician warned me that if I don't use sun protection soon I might end up looking like this....

That scared me enough to try out a couple of sunblocks. I hated them all until I found this:

Sunplay Perfect Shield with SPF 130 (yes its ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY, no typo there) in Clear Finish. Retails at Sasa for RM29.90 per bottle, but I got mine at a discount because it was on offer. It comes in a tiny bottle of 31ml, but I'm estimating that it would probably last around 3 -4 months since you only need a little bit each time. What I like about Sunplay is that its texture is so watery, just like.....water!

I know the pic looks abit gross, but I just wanted to demonstrate the light, watery texture

Although the directions say that it can be used alone, I prefer applying Sunplay after my moisturizer. The sunblock gives the face a nice radiant glow upon application, so I get sunblock + highlighter in one! I also noticed that my skin is smoother and more hydrated, and I'm able to cut down my use of foundation now because my foundation spreads more easily and evenly over the skin.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Next, Loreal's Double Extension Mascara in black.
I'm lovin it!!! I think this is the closest to fake lashes that mascaralogists (people who research mascaras?) can get. The white base coat on one end lengthens and thickens the lashes, while the black mascara on the other end covers the white base coat and further enhances its effects. Here are some before and after pics that I took:
My post-curled, pre-mascara-ed lashes.
After applying the white base coat.
After applying mascara.
One of the disadvantages of this mascara is that its texture is pretty thick, making it prone to clumping. Our fine Asian hair is generally unable to withstand the heaviness of such a thick mascara, so the end result would be droopy cockroach legs hanging from your eyes.....Hahaha I'm just exaggerating, but you do need to re-curl your lashes after applying the mascara, and get rid of the clumps after curling. Not to worry, lash curler and brow brush to the rescue!!!
Why do I use the brow brush instead of a lash comb? That's because if you use the lash comb to comb through your lashes, the mascara won't be thick anymore and your lashes also won't look as thick. But if you use the brow brush, it will get rid of the clumps without getting rid of the volume. Just like when you apply volumizing products at the roots of your hair, you don't comb it flat again right?
And the end result = Longer and thicker lashes!
Another great thing about this mascara? It stays on the whole day without smudging. One coat of base coat + one coat of mascara is all you need to achieve amazing results, but I like to pile on lots of each when I intend to do a smokey-eyed look.
Loreal Double Extension Mascara retails at Watsons, Sasa, and leading pharmacies at RM45.00. Heheh, that sounded like a line from an advertisement...
Before and After:
Miss Sixty @ KLCC
For those who are about to bombard me for putting up a title that's irrelevant to the main body of this entry, please bear with me being a bitchy backstabber in the upcoming paragraph ok? I just HAVE to vent my anger...
This morning my bf called me at 8 something in the morning to be an extra in a TV commercial (I can't reveal which, just in case I get sued). Speaking of commercial, the Hotlink one came out already but couldn't see any of our faces...bah!!!! Anyways yeah, all was fine till the director's fugly girlfriend came and couldn't peel her slutty eyes off my boy. I tell you I was SOOOO damn pissed! It's like "Hel-lo bitch? Your boyfriend is over there. And I'm not invisible you know." *glares daggers at aforementioned slut and points at direction of the correct boyfriend* GAAAAHHHHH! Thank goodness I was there...otherwise...hmpf! I am positively fuming!!!!! Nothing much to report about the fashion scene there as it was just plain office attire.
*judging from the deliberate use of "RED" as text color for profanities referring to HER, you should have some idea of how mad I was...
Moving on....I finally had a chance to check out the Miss Sixty store in KLCC. Sorry I forgot to take some pictures, wasn't in much of a mood, and my feet were hurting from wearing pointy heeled stilettos for the past 11 hours. Maybe I'll drop by another day. Their apparel consists mostly of wardrobe basics - denim, tees, tops, jackets and the like, but with an edgy twist. I find it to be more for someone who's confident, sassy, and funky who likes to stand out from the crowd.
I only had time to check out their jeans cos I was in a hurry. Miss Sixty jeans feature some interesting cuts, washes and designs, but I noticed that they featured alot of distressed denim. Ooh, and I lurrve their back pockets! They made my butt look so cute! Unfortunately, the rest of it doesn't seem to suit petite Asian girls like me. Although the bum, waist and hip area looked good, it was loose for me at the lower thigh area, and as expected, waaay too long. There isn't a photo I can show, but if I were to describe how I looked, I think the word "stunted" would suffice. I think its because the jeans were made for European women with European proportions (the jeans are made in Italy), so the extra fabric around my lower thighs was actually meant to be at an European woman's mid-thigh. Now that's sad. Priced at RM700+, the price is pretty reasonable for a pair of "made in Italy" jeans. Their shoes are really cute too, but like I said, not much time.
Anyways, here's an example of some of their stuff...
These are the jeans that I tried on and looked weird in
(pic from: www.w1style.co.uk)
Yummy!
(pic from: www.shopbop.com)
Not exactly my style, but yeah...
(pic from: www.shopbop.com)
Energie is the label for guys, which is also sold in a seperate corner at the Miss Sixty shop. Sort of like the Topshop/Topman concept. My bf said that the colors for Miss Sixty jeans were nicer, but the prices for Energie jeans was much cheaper, about RM400+, which makes it only a little more expensive than Guess? jeans. Hmm, not bad huh?
Oh and I'd really like to commend the staff at Miss Sixty - friendly, helpful, and non-pushy. Excellent!
Prom Night - Dresses v.2
Decisions, decisions...at first I was so sure about my first design...
But then I was watching Dorothy Dandridge on HBO and Halle Berry was wearing this retro but oh-so gorgeous halter dress that tempted me into designing this:
But after consulting with some friends, we agreed that the black dress was elegant but too safe and boring. On the other hand, the short length of skirt number one was cute, but seemed more like clubbing wear. Which gives it an advantage of being versatile, but losing out on the "stun factor". And so I incorporated design 1 and design 2, which resulted in these:
And then I got stuck having to decide how I want the bottom half of the dress to be like - skin tight with a thigh high slit up the side, or a cheeky mix of satin and chiffon?
However, most people preferred the original design because of its sexy back, and personally I agree with them. There's just something about that top to bottom slit that appeals to the masses... ;)
So, tonight I'll be going to the tailor and guess what? I'm sticking to design number one, but most probably I'll scrap the mini dress and make a full length gown (like Eva's, posted earlier) in satin. Now that should be stun everyone sufficiently, don't you think? :P
Cyber Shopping: Cure or Curse?
On a non-uni day, here goes my typical morning; the alarm clock goes off. Snooze. Back to dreamland. The alarm goes off again. Snooze again. Back to dreamland again. The alarm goes off, yet for another time. And just as I am about to hit the snooze button again, my dear neighbour knocks on the door and ask if I would “please wake up for heaven’s sake and shut the alarm clock off”.
So there I would go, dragging myself to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face. I would then fix myself my must-have morning coffee with toast and egg and switch on my notebook. A couple of clicks soon after, I would already be on the Internet, checking my mailboxes and popping onto MSN Messenger to see if any of my friends are already up as well.
Then comes my daily fashion research routine. I would take glimpses at several of my favourite fashion websites before finally settling down to do what I love best: shopping. Yes, you read it right. Shopping in the comforts of my own bedroom, in my pyjamas and my messy hair, with my warm coffee and toast on the table and of course; a working credit card in my purse.
Home shopping is certainly not something new. Remember the Avon lady? Catalogues featuring cosmetics, apparel as well as home and kitchenware were often chucked into our mailboxes or conveniently thrown into our porches. Sometimes direct sellers themselves would casually pay us unwanted visits at home, rims of enticing, colourful catalogues tucked under their arms. Some of the successful business that were built upon this principle include Cosway, Amway and storage-solutions giant, Tupperware.
While catalogue shopping continued to prosper especially in areas where access to commercial shopping centers is limited, another form of home-shopping emerged; shop TV. I remember coming back from school in the afternoon to see Malik Noor promoting Kayla Beverly Hills health supplements on television. Then there was the all-amazing Didi 7 demonstration-advertisement which got my brothers and I hooked on to Science for a while. Similar to catalogue shopping, shop TV saves customers from the inconvenience of having to bear with distressing traffic congestion, long check-out queues and desperately pushy salespersons.
Home-shopping, however, did not gain as much momentum until the Internet became popular. It started out with small companies and home-based businesses promoting limited products and services on their websites. Soon enough, websites became a marketing necessity. In the fashion scene, leading brands began establishing up-to-date online catalogues and made happen the one dream that every shopaholics have been weaving; online boutiques. The appeal of flicking through dresses using the keyboard instead of flipping them on the racks increased with the rise of ebay, the online marketplace. While most online boutiques have pricey tags, on eBay, a pair of Levi’s jeans could easily be sold at RM 30 or less.
As cashless online transactions slowly gained popularity, the e-business industry was thought by some to be the cure for compulsive shopping. While our emotions go frenzy seeing huge ‘SALES’ banners at the mall-urging us to pick up imperative purchases-the shopping experience on the Internet is deemed by some to be somewhat less self-destructing. Online shopping is item-specific. Clear-cut categories are used to classify items so instead of pushing the trolley down confusing aisles, we click on the appropriate categories and search for the specific items needed. Logically, this should reduce the chances of us being tempted into buying something unnecessary (like the time when you intended to buy a pair of boots but went home with a new purse instead just because it was on 70 percent reduction).
As for me, online shopping was a love at first sight. Drawn instantly by its 24/7 availability, I love the fact that online shopping gives me access to international brands and limited-edition collections (which sometimes may not arrive at our local shores at all) even at ungodly hours.
Having developed an obsession for vintage accessories and bargain buys, I have been a devoted visitor of eBay. This year alone, I have secured myself a couple of steals; limited edition books, hand-made accessories and cheap, vintage clothes. The items are mostly pre-loved but are still in fabulous condition. Shopping on eBay gives me what I term as ‘repeated thrills’; I get the thrill of browsing through the list of items, the thrill of bidding and re-biding and finally, the thrill of waiting for the package to arrive in my mailbox. Shown in the picture here is a vintage dress I bought on eBay for only 5 dollars, all inclusive of postage and handling.
However, as with all other trends and fads, online shopping has not gone without criticisms. Traditional shopaholics feel that online shopping takes away the essential pleasures of shopping; the actual process of walking into a nice boutique, touching the delicate fabrics, examining the fine details such as the stitches and seams and of course, the exciting experience of trying on the garments in the fitting room itself. As much as I adore online shopping, I must admit that the absence of sensorial experience is indeed a limitation of online shopping.
Needless to say, the idea of cyberspace-shopping helping us become wiser shoppers has been rejected by those on the opposing camp. Among others, it is contended that online shopping makes shopping a little too convenient. While shoppers may not have the time to make daily visits to the shopping mall, the virtual store is merely a click a way. I log on to the Internet everyday and spend three to four hours doing my research or working on my assignments; during which the eBay page is always left open, just in case a good deal comes along.
And on eBay, a good deal always comes along (note the sarcasm here) and before you know it, you have received a payment invoice for a pair of jeans which look quite similar to the three pairs you already have hanging in the closet.
Regardless of what the current debates on online shopping are all about, one thing I am personally convinced of is that the allure of cyberspace shopping has moved from providing convenience to quenching the shopaholics’ thirst for retail urges. Whether online shopping compels one to spend more is questionable but so is whether it actually helps to reduce impulsive purchases.
Now, did you say there is a Kookai dress up for auction on eBay? =P
Prom night - Part 1
I'm not a big fan of proms, but somehow I still find myself looking forward to it. Guess that's cos prom is a great excuse to dress up and look pretty. The abundance of prom-themed teen flicks out there has taught us that this is the night where ugly ducklings turn into swans, and miracles can happen, though at this present moment I'm having a hard time pushing the images of drunken guys and irresponsible teenagers engaging in unprotected sex (also associated with proms).
This year's prom is going to be at Equatorial KL, and the theme is "Bella Notte", meaning beautiful night. Although the Equatorial is a 5 star hotel, its not exactly my choice. I'd prefer places like Renaissance, Mandarin Oriental or Sheraton Imperial...hotels with great grand entrances. Yes, I'm a sucker for making big impressions.
Now comes the big question - What to wear? Well, that has already been solved. Or rather, my boyfriend decided for me because I couldn't choose between sweet/sexy or elegant/classy. For your information, the former won.
My dress is going to be tailored by a Chinese woman who works for a Malaysian designer specializing in evening gowns. I've already designed it, taking inspiration from Eva Longoria's oh-so-gorgeous Emmy gown (I swear that woman would look good even in a potato sack), and an AUD200 dress that my friend's friend wore (I only saw it in a photograph though). Here are the pictures; I'm sorry I had to black out the couple's faces to protect their identities, which is quite a shame as the guy is pretty cute ;)
Ok, now have a look at my design. I apologize that I can't draw for nuts. Here's the gist of how I intend to do it - The neckline is high, cut-in at the shoulders to accentuate them, as well as to downplay my lack of cleavage.The back of the dress is similar, except there will be a huge (sexy) slit running from the neck to the small of my back. The color scheme and length is to be the same as the dress on top. I'm planning to use gold around the neck (like Eva's) and at the hip (like the original). I'm hoping to use mesh-like material for those, but I'd have to ask the tailor first to check if its possible.
Ok, thats all for now. I'll try to record the process of getting the dress, the hair, the accessories, and the make up for that special night. Keep checking!
Window shopping @ Hartamas
My boyfriend was such a darling to agree to accompany me to get my fix of window shopping today(like he always does ^_^), so we checked out a few boutiques at Desa Sri Hartamas.
First stop : Charms Boutique.
Unfortunately it was closed although we were there at about 8pm. Oh well, too bad. Moving on.
Second stop: Little Black Book. (I like the name, has a ring to it)
There was this rack that had a RM29.90 sign and naturally I was drawn to it first. There was this cute black halter empire waist dress with silver sequins on it that caught my eye. The original price (or so I thought) was RM79.00. Such a steal right? A RM79 dress selling for RM29.90... But when I asked the salesgirl, she said only the blouses were Rm29.90. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the sign had a picture of a hand on it, pointing towards the blouses. Hmpf! I'd rather they didn't do that in future, misleading their customers.
I find the clothes just so-so for my liking. They're pretty trendy, and very reasonably priced (on average about RM39 and above for a top), but the quality leaves alot to be desired. Some of the things there could probably be bought at Sungai Wang Plaza for a cheaper price...
Third stop: Cats Whiskers
My personal favorite! Saw alot of stuff that I liked and was tempted to buy, but unfortunately I didn't have much time to browse around. I think I shall go back one of these days. I like the fact that everything is color coded - clothes, shoes, bags, and accessories. It makes browsing such a pleasure. Their designs are good, the prices are reasonable, and the quality is okay. It's a great place to get seasonal items, especially for people on a budget like me. I tried on a few tops but they didn't fit me well because those tops happened to be free size (I'm too small for free sized, boo hoo!)
White ballet flats with silver/black flower applique - RM49
(Sorry if the color is out, cos I took it with my camera phone and the flash was on)
Gold bejeweled bangles (set of 3) - RM39
Earrings - RM59
Final stop: Blook
Ah yes, the place that opens till midnights on weekdays, 1am on weekends. I've always liked their stuff, but somehow I haven't bought much from them. I don't think I'll visit their outlet in Hartamas again though. I prefer the Bangsar one. First of all, they don't have seats outside the fitting rooms, so poor boyfie had to stand. They do have those teak single seaters in the fitting room though. I asked one of the ladies working there if we could use one of those and they agreed. I tried on a figure-hugging black dress that looked good on me, but I looked like an OL (Office Lady), as my boyfriend observed. Not that I mind, really :)
I asked him to take a picture of me wearing the dress so I could feature it here; one of the salesgirls caught us and told us that no photos were allowed. Fine. But then that B*TCH came and asked my boyfriend to stand up so she could put the chair back in the fitting room. Now THAT pissed me off. It's not like they were closing or anything, it was only 9pm! Fine, if she wants to make us feel unwelcome, she can be sure that Blook Sri Hartamas receives bad publicity from me, and I shall NOT go back there again. So there! We left after that.
Haha anyway, here's the aforementioned dress. It's not such a good picture and you can't really see it clearly, but it has a high neckline with cut in sleeves. The neckline of my prom dress is going to be something like that. But not in black of course...its too common! Oh by the way, see the stool in the next fitting room? That's the one I'm talking about.
Alritey, time to get some beauty sleep. I hope I remember never to go to that shop again.
I love my gold shoes :)
Here are pictures of two of my latest babies. At times like these, I unleash my inner 13-year old and allow her imagination to wander off into the land of girlish fantasies - that she is a beautifully exotic Arabian princess living in a golden palace, waited on hand an foot by a posse of raven-haired maidens clad in rich silks and laces.
The reason that this has remained as my favorite fantasy throughout the years is the fact that being an Arabian princess would automatically equip me with power, as well as pockets as deep as the oil mines in my-father-the-King’s kingdom. That said, I would have everything I need to fulfill my deepest, darkest whims and fancies, which of course changed as I grew older, wiser, and at the same time, more evil. *insert horns and pitchfork here* And just in case you’re curious, these desires ranged from a stable-full of handsome stallions to the wish to pay someone to finish off that no-good ex-boyfriend of mine.
As for today, the Arabian princess wishes to go on a shopping spree, so while her subjects are busy preparing the private jet, you shall be given the honor of having a peek at her royal highness’ shopping list:
1. Chanel tweed jacket
This trend was originally started by Coco Chanel herself, and has been a fashion staple for the past 75 years. Why do people love it so much? The answer is simple – versatility. EVERYONE can wear it. A teenage girl can wear it with jeans or a flirty skirt; A 30 year old business woman, with her favorite slacks; and an 80 year old grandma could wear it with a knitted woolen sweater and match it with her favorite shawl…the possibilities are endless! This is made possible by a delightful array of candy colors and a variety of styles and cuttings to flatter every figure and cater to every taste.
<tab>
2. Hermes ‘Kelly’ bag
Honestly, I cannot understand what the hype is over this bag. All I know is that it was inspired by the beautiful princess Grace Kelly of Monaco and that the waiting list is apparently 4 years long, not to mention the prices continue to rise over the years. A 25cm Kelly bag now costs $7000+. However, I have to admit that it is a beauty.
3. Burberry trench coat
Once playing the role an essential piece of outerwear for the U.S. forces during the era of WW2, our favorite checkered label’s signature piece has come a long way…
4. Louis Vuitton luggage
Louis Vuitton is what you would call a “fashion legend”. The success of LV date back to the 19th century when Louis Vuitton (the man) was a successful dress-packer for Parisian aristocrats, as well as a favorite of Empress Eugenie, the wife of Emperor Napoleon III (it was a common practice for the rich to hire someone to pack their bags for them). One thing led to another, and Louis Vuitton the brand was born.
In this modern day and time, no self-respecting, jet-setting fashionista should be seen without these LV babies. Unfortunately you might be putting yourself at risk of the heartache that comes from watching your precious bags being hauled around and manhandled by careless porters, as well as the likelihood of being a regular visitor at the “missing luggage” counter.
The Steamer Bag
This was the first piece of soft luggage in the world. It also happens to be the predecessor of today’s backpacks.
The Keep-all
Classic LV luggage piece; one of their best-sellers. Was the first piece of foldable luggage in the world in 1924.
5. Cartier tank watch
Classic, timeless, and sophisticated – the urban metrochick’s dream. ‘Nuff said.
6. La Perla Lingerie
3 words - “Ooh la la!” La Perla is truly fit for a princess! This Italian megabrand features lingerie in beautiful, sizzling designs complete with exquisite, titillating details meant to capture the heart and delight the senses (hmm…the man’s or the woman’s?) Definitely worth splurging on! Unfortunately there aren’t any La Perla boutiques in Malaysia, but a glimpse at their website (http://www.laperla.com) alone is enough to send tongues wagging…
New York Fashion Week, Fall/Winter 05/06
Here are some (more wearable) pictures of designer creations, off the New York Fashion Week runways which I diligently compiled from various websites. Below are some of my direct observations:
1. Turns out I was right; cream is THE way to go!
2. Loads of delicious, glittery embellishments spell glamour with a capital G.
3. A welcome rebound of the monochromatic duo (black and white) that would make Marty the Zebra (I hope you all watched Madagascar) proud!
4. Skirts seem to be a staple favorite, be it A-line, circle, or pencil  the perfect excuse to bring out the girlishness in every one of us.
5. Coats and jackets are a must-have (duh!), especially their shrunken/cropped counterparts which I personally think are oh so adorable!
6. Gorgeous, elaborate dresses in wine, red, and gold complement the festivity in the air.
7. Rich, luxurious fabrics and furs are in (velvet, brocade, silk, satin, mink, etc) for chic winter comfort (unfortunately, not for us Malaysian babes).
8. The bohemian craze looks as though its going to hang around for some time yet, so dont throw out your gypsy skirts!
A witty Intro of the fashionista
Hola everyone, thanks for visiting my blog! Now before you proceed to delve into the yummilicious bits of information lying here and there, let me give a brief introduction of myself.
First things first, I am not blonde! I do not have luscious locks of gold cascading down my back, nor do I have eyes so blue that you could drown in it. My complexion is not what you would call fair and rosy, but I am pale enough to wear almost any color as long as it suits my skin tone.
Being vertically challenged at 5 feet 2 inches, it’s on a relatively rare occasion that I’m able to look someone in the eye without lifting my head. However, I absolutely refuse to allow such…ah…“shortcomings” to hinder my love and devotion to the occasional micro-mini or a pair of Daisy Duke’s. Sure, Gisele has a pair of mile-long legs that every guy drools over and every girl would die for, but it doesn’t really matter as long as I’m happy with how I look, right? Of course, thanks to the invention of stiletto’s (I love you Jimmy and Stuart!), height is no longer a factor ;)
I would love to declare my profession as clotheshorse, shoe addict, fashion follower, and last but not least, full-blown shopaholic. However, I am just your average girl who loves to dress up and look pretty, but at the same time try REALLY hard not to go overboard by spending more than I can afford, especially when I’m earning a typical worker’s salary (which most of us know does not amount to much). My average non-working day usually involves pigging out (for those who don’t know me, I share a love-hate relationship with food), hanging with friends, and scouring every nook and cranny for a good dose of retail therapy to de-stress myself after a whole week’s worth of sitting routinely at my desk, faithfully typing out busloads of information that rival companies would pay an obscene amount of money (enough for a pair of Jimmy’s AND Stuart’s) to get their hands on while the manager makes it her job to ensure that my in-tray is never empty (she must be jealous of my new Prada handbag).
That leads us to the purpose of creating this blog - it serves as an outlet for me to vent my frustrations of falling in love with the latest designer creations but unfortunately lacking the financial capabilities to afford (all of) them; as well as a fun, informative site for my fellow fashionistas to keep abreast of the latest trends and happenings in the world of Malaysian fashion (I have my sources). Look out for juicy tidbits on where to find irresistible bargains, as well as features of the next big fashion labels and catwalk reviews. However, do bear in mind that most of my entries are based entirely on personal opinion and observations, and in no way should they be used as academic reference or guidance, although I would be deeply flattered if ever there was such a day.
Last but not least, enjoy your stay, and feel free to drop a comment or two, share your opinions, or give me any suggestions. They would be most welcome and appreciated!
over and out!
